It's still online, here: http://seanterrill.com/2012/01/06/refractometer-calculator/ If you or other homebrewers rely on it, as I do, consider making a donation to Sean: link. Sean has been an . We have a complete guide with spreadsheet for finding your refractometer’s wort correction factor. A refractometer is a nifty brewing .As far as I know, you can determine the final gravity solely with a refractometer only if you know the original gravity (either with a hydrometer or the refractometer). I am a small-batch brewer, and exclusively use a refractometer for gravity measurements. . This calculator by Sean Terrill is probably the most accurate to determine final .

‎Refracto is a user friendly tool for homebrewers that will help you to convert your refractometer measurements during a fermentation process from °Brix to °Plato and SG. It automatically compensates the alcohol effect during fermentation of .

When determining the wort concentration of your beer during fermentation with any refractometer, an additional alcohol correction is necessary. Choose one of the offered formulas (Sean Terrill or Standard) for . Note from HBF: Refractometers can be used to measure gravity throughout the brewing process. You can also estimate the alcohol content of your beer if you forget to take an OG with the use of a refractometer and a hydrometer. Check out Sean Terrill’s excellent refractometer calculator. Looking for a deal?

I always was told that using a refractometer was the most the most accurate (specifically Brix) to measure ABV. I tried 5 calculators and all are different, especially when I try to use gravity and brix combined as some calculators do. I will use sean terrill's for now but would like to honesty get a accurate reading at some point.

Refractometers can also be used to measure gravity throughout the fermentation process. Just plug your numbers into a calculator for correction after fermentation begins. See: Sean Terrill’s Refractometer Calculator; If you have a refractometer AND a hydrometer you can estimate ABV without a starting gravity.

Since my FFT gravity correction was spot on, I assume the calculator I used is working properly. Is there a reason the beer refractometer and hydrometer readings were off? I would assume with the wort correction factor and using Sean Terrill's calculator the batch gravity readings should have matched.

Refractometer Calculator Convert pre-fermentation Brix to gravity, Brix to gravity during and after fermentation, approximate ABV, and original gravity from current Brix and gravity using the Refractometer Calculators below. Pre-Fermentation Brix to Gravity Converter. Refractometers are great for small sample size and no need for temperature correction. If you don't mind a large amount of beer sacrificed to measure gravity hydrometers are great. . I have been comparing my refractometer readings post fermentation with correction from Sean Terrill's calculator versus hydrometer measurements for the past 20 .

My only issue is that when I compare the results across the 3 calculators I’ve tried (Sean Terrill’s, Northern Brewer, Brewer’s Friend) I get wildly varying FG numbers.enough to swing ABV by 1-1.5%. I just bought a new hydrometer after relying on my refractometer solely for a while after the last hydrometer broke. +1 for terrill. Apex sounds pretty good right about now. Any refractometer calculator gets thrown off by a wide variety of things. In particular there has been correlations between oil content from flaked oats/barley etc, as well as an SRM dependence (makes sense as the darker the liquid the more light absorption occurs.

The refractometer research of Petr Novotny has far eclipsed that of Sean Terrill, and a Novtny based FG calculator will give far more accurate refractometer based FG readings. Click to expand. Only way to know that is to have the data to back it up.The Wort Correction Factor is generally required for refractometers which measure in Brix; unless you know better, it is best to leave it at the default value. Share and Enjoy! Readings. Hydrometer. Refractometer. Specific Gravity. Brix. Original Gravity. Final Gravity. Wort Correction. Calculations.

For me, the Sean Terrill web page that Vikeman referenced was very illuminating. Maybe you'll find it worthwhile. There's some discussion of the correction factor, which is also adjustable in Brewcipher. FWIW, on a IPA sort of recipe I brewed the other week the hydrometer and refractometer SG readings on the wort actually matched at about 1.07 . Another two thumbs up for Sean Terrill's calculator. I checked the results of his calculator vs hydrometer for a number of beers; the calculator is quite accurate: I compared readings on 19 beers, the standard deviation between by hydrometer and (corrected) refractometer readings is 0.0006.Sean Terrill hosts the refractometer calculator that I recommend. I think it's the most accurate of the calculators I've seen. If you're a math nerd, I encourage you to read the work that Sean did on his calculations to get his results that he based his formula on. Between the level of detail he goes into, along with my own observational ."Reliable" as in the readings are internally consistent, but no refractometer is accurate against wort without a wort correction factor, which is calculated for each individual instrument based on experience. You can read more on wort .

Gravity: This is an adaption of Sean Terrill’s Refractometer Calculator (used by permission). Thanks Sean for your excellent work on this! Thanks Sean for your excellent work on this! Water Volume Summary: This double checks to make sure you’re mash parameters do not exceed the volume of water you practically have available. My refractometer reads this solution at only a wee scant tick below 10 BRIX, and on the SG scale it reads 1.038 to the best of my ability to discern it. On the Sean Terrill website 9.95 BRIX = 1.0382 SG, so for this single test case case my refractometer actually appears to be reading rather decently along both scales.

My own WCF here is about 0.99 or maybe 1.00. Others like Sean Terrill report an average of 1.04, which I have not been able to duplicate, at least not for MY refractometer. YMMV. I have found 3 other equations as well to compare against from Terrill, Bonham, Gossett, and they are all reasonably consistent with small range.I picked up a hydrometer to take FG readings. Up to this point I have been using a refractometer only and trusting the Sean Terrill calculator to get me close to my FG. I used it for a few brews over the weekend and found that sometimes the hydrometer and refractometer agreed, but most of the time they differed, especially in the higher gravities.Refractometer readings which contain alcohol must be adjusted by an additional factor. This calculator uses the formula presented in Zymurgy magazine, in the July/August 2017 issue: Novotny, P. Revisiting The Refractometer: Improved fermentation monitoring through refractometry. Zymurgy 2017, 40 (4), 48–54. Entered all the info in at Sean Terrill and got exactly 1.013. Great I thought everything is right on. However, while putting my hydrometer away I happened to notice on the Brix side of it that 1.013 is less then 5 Brix. Could anyone explain why this is. Again, when I took all my measurements both the hydrometer and refractometer agreed.

OP, you forgot one thing. The SG scale is also off on that refractometer. I have the same one. It shows 31 Brix = 1.120 in the sight. That's way low. 31 Brix comes up as 1.128 on Sean Terrill's calculator, and even higher on some others. So, never use the SG scale on it, use his calculator, and you'll be fine. A little late to the party . I have created a quadratic based refractometer calculator. Take 3 readings of 3 different unfermented worts (I made an ~1.075 SG wort with DME and took measurements, then added some water and repeated twice) and enter the WRI (uncorrected Brix from refractometer) and SG (measured with a hydrometer) and the . Hi Sean, I am so glad I found this.I was racking my brain trying to figure out why my barleywine’s fermentation seems to have stuck so soon, but after using your calculator, I see that it’s stuck about where I expected it to (once I reached 13% alcohol using White Labs California Ale yeast, rather than stuck at only 8% alcohol, which is where the refractometer is .There is more information at the Brewers Friend page and Sean Terrill's website. If you want to learn a little more, we have a wiki page on refracometers that discusses some of the reasons for discrepancies: . Refractometer, unfortunately, is not as much of use for brewing as for distilling. They rely partially on the viscosity of the liquid.
